We make no secret of the fact that Exmoor is one of our favourite parts of England, with its rugged inland beauty and breathtaking coastal scenery. It straddles the Somerset and Devon borders but is usually less busy than the better-known areas of Devon and Cornwall further west.
On our several visits there we've usually planned our own Exmoor holidays, but next time we definitely want to take a look at some of the Exmoor safaris on offer. Some of the Exmoor safaris that are available cover exactly the things that we enjoy about the area - wildlife, walking, cycling, food and photography.
There's one safari tour company that's of particular interest if you want to travel from London to Exmoor: Escape the City Tours.
Escape the City Tours
Escape the City Tours is run by a husband-and-wife team who did just that - escaped the city of London to buy their first home together in North Devon. From here they run a range of Exmoor weekend safaris, with a strong belief in getting people to use public transport rather than bring their cars.
Food Safari: Starting on Friday night, this foodie's delight will have you catching a fish on Saturday, and then learning how to cook it in a fish cookery masterclass. On Sunday guests visit a working Devon farm, The Big Red Cow Farm, to be followed by another cookery class, this time on cooking beef.
Walking Weekend: Walking Weekends run all year and start on a Friday afternoon. Saturday sees a walk on the South West Costal Path, looking for Exmoor ponies and wild goats, while Sunday offers a lesser-known walk on Exmoor itself.
Photography Experience: Led by professional photographer Dave Green, this weekend course teaches you how to use your camera effectively and gives you chance to photograph, beaches, rock pools, caves and panoramas. There are also workshops - and plenty of food, including Devon cream teas.
So, if you want to go from London (or anywhere else) to Exmoor, Escape the City Tours will meet you at the nearest mainline station and then take care of the transport for the rest of the tour and take you back to the station again. For their Food Safari the nearest station is Taunton, and for the Photography Experience and Walking Weekends it's Tiverton. Both stations are reached by train from London's Euston Station. You can check timetables and book tickets on the RailEasy website.
There are direct coaches from London's Victoria Coach Station to Taunton, and others which require a change of coach. There are also direct coaches from Victoria to Tiverton. You can check times and prices online at the National Express website, but also check with Escape the City to see if arrival and departure times are convenient for the tour.
