Going from London to Winchester by train is easy, and the best way of making a day trip to Winchester from London. Trains to Winchester leave from London's Waterloo station, and there are several trains an hour, from early morning to late at night.
The journey time is just under or just over an hour, depending on the particular train you catch. The only thing to watch out for is that some services require a change of train at Basingstoke, so as there are plenty of direct trains, avoid the ones which require you to change.
The railway station in Winchester is about a half-mile from the cathedral and main part of the city centre. It’s an easy 10-minute walk. If you need to take a taxi then these are available at a taxi rank outside the station. You shouldn’t need to book one ahead.
